How to Use the PC Bottleneck Calculator

Takes about 10 seconds. No account needed.

1
Pick your GPU
Select from NVIDIA RTX 40/30 series or AMD RX 7000/6000 series.
2
Pick your CPU
Choose your Intel or AMD processor from the dropdown.
3
Set your resolution
Select 1080p, 1440p, or 4K — this changes the result significantly.
4
Get your result
See your bottleneck %, which part is limiting you, and what to upgrade.

Why resolution matters: The same CPU and GPU that shows a 20% CPU bottleneck at 1080p can drop to 8% at 1440p. At higher resolutions the GPU handles more pixels, which shifts the workload away from the CPU. A bottleneck calculator that ignores resolution is giving you half the answer. This is why we always ask for your target resolution before calculating.

What Is a PC Bottleneck — and Why Does It Matter?

You spent real money on your PC. Games still stutter. FPS still drops. You have no idea which part is the problem. That's a bottleneck.

A PC bottleneck happens when one component can't keep up with the rest of your system. In gaming, it's almost always a mismatch between your CPU (processor) and GPU (graphics card). One finishes its work and sits idle, waiting for the other to catch up. That wait shows up in your game as dropped frames and stuttering.

There are two types that matter for gaming:

CPU bottleneck — your processor can't feed data to the GPU fast enough. The GPU sits at 60-70% usage while the CPU is maxed out. This is the bad kind. You'll see it most at 1080p, in open-world games, or titles with heavy AI like Cyberpunk 2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

GPU bottleneck — your graphics card is the limiting factor. CPU usage is low, GPU is at 95-100%. This is the ideal gaming scenario. It means your GPU is fully used and you're getting everything it has. Most gamers at 1440p and 4K will have a mild GPU bottleneck — that's fine.

The confusion comes from treating any bottleneck percentage as a problem. A 10-15% bottleneck is normal in almost every system. You will not feel it. Only when it crosses 20-25% does it actually hurt performance in a way you'd notice.

Our free bottleneck calculator gives you the exact percentage — not a vague "compatible" or "not compatible" answer. Run a CPU bottleneck check, a GPU bottleneck check, or test any CPU and GPU combination in seconds.

Quick Bottleneck FAQ

Is 10% bottleneck bad? +
No. A 10-15% bottleneck is normal and you will not feel it. Only worry about bottlenecks over 20-25%.
Does bottleneck cause stuttering? +
Severe CPU bottlenecks can cause frame time spikes and micro-stutters in CPU-heavy games. GPU bottlenecks rarely cause stutters — just lower FPS.
How do I check for a bottleneck manually? +
Open Task Manager while gaming. If your CPU is near 100% and GPU is below 80%, you have a CPU bottleneck. Check during actual gameplay, not the main menu.
Can I fix a bottleneck without buying parts? +
Sometimes. Raising your resolution shifts load from CPU to GPU. Enabling XMP/EXPO in BIOS speeds up RAM. But if your bottleneck is over 25%, an upgrade is the real fix.
Is RTX 4070 good for Ryzen 5 5600? +
At 1440p yes — around 12% CPU bottleneck, barely noticeable. At 1080p it jumps to 18-22% in CPU-heavy games. This pairing works best at 1440p.
Does RAM affect bottleneck? +
Yes. Slow RAM makes CPU bottlenecks worse. Enable XMP/EXPO in BIOS — it is free and can reduce a mild CPU bottleneck by 5-8% in memory-sensitive games.
Free fix most people miss

If your RAM is running below its rated speed, enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) in your BIOS. It takes 2 minutes. It does not cost anything. In memory-sensitive games like Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield, it can reduce a CPU bottleneck by 5-8% with zero hardware changes.

Frequently Asked Questions — PC Bottleneck Calculator

Everything you need to know about PC bottlenecks, GPU performance, and using our free tools.

What is a PC bottleneck? +
A PC bottleneck happens when one component — usually the CPU or GPU — limits the performance of the other. If your GPU is at 100% utilization while your CPU sits at 40%, your CPU is the bottleneck. Use our free bottleneck calculator to find the exact percentage in your system.
How accurate is this bottleneck calculator? +
Our bottleneck calculator uses normalized performance scores from thousands of real-world benchmarks. Results land within 10-15% of measured real-world bottleneck. The calculator accounts for resolution and use case, since these heavily affect which component is the limiting factor.
Is a 10% bottleneck bad? +
No. A 10-15% bottleneck is normal in almost every gaming PC. You will not feel it. Only bottlenecks above 20-25% are worth addressing through upgrades.
How do I reduce a CPU bottleneck? +
Four options: raise your gaming resolution (shifts load to GPU), enable XMP/EXPO in BIOS for faster RAM, close background apps, or upgrade the CPU. The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the current best gaming CPU for minimizing bottleneck.
Which GPU and CPU combinations have no bottleneck? +
Combinations with under 10% bottleneck include: RTX 4070 + Ryzen 7 7800X3D at 1440p, RTX 4060 Ti + Core i5-13600K at 1080p, and RX 7800 XT + Ryzen 5 7600X at 1440p. Use our bottleneck calculator to check any combination.
How do I check for a bottleneck without a calculator? +
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) while playing a demanding game. If your CPU is near 100% and GPU is below 80%, you have a CPU bottleneck. If GPU is near 100% and CPU is relaxed, that is a GPU bottleneck — and that is actually the ideal gaming scenario. Check during actual gameplay, not in the main menu.
Does RAM affect PC bottleneck? +
Yes. Slow RAM makes CPU bottlenecks worse. Enabling XMP or EXPO in your BIOS is free and can reduce a mild CPU bottleneck by 5-8% in memory-sensitive games. If your RAM is below 3200MHz, this is the first thing to fix.
Is the RTX 4070 good for a Ryzen 5 5600? +
At 1440p, yes — around 12% CPU bottleneck, which most people will not notice. At 1080p it jumps to 18-22% in CPU-heavy games. If you game mostly at 1080p, upgrade to a Ryzen 5 7600 first, or switch to 1440p where this pairing works well.
